Pets can be assigned to Tasks for several different shifts each day, each lasting 4 hours; from 6am to 10am, the "morning" shift, 10am to 2pm, the "mid-day" shift, 2pm to 6pm, the "afternoon" shift, and 6pm to 10pm, the "evening" shift. If a player currently has a Radiant Candle active, they can also assign a pet to the "night" shift for four hours any time between 10pm and 6am. While assigned to a Task, a pet will be unable to participate in other Tasks, though it can still be used in Combat. Pets can be assigned to a particular shift automatically from their petpage, in which case they'll do that Task every day that their player logs on to Chimeric, or a player can manually select an upcoming or current shift for the pet to partake in for the day. Note that if a pet is assigned to a Gathering Task partway through a shift (for instance, beginning a "mid-day" shift at noon) it will only collect a proportional amount of the resources that it would have if given the full time, while a pet assigned to an already-underway Crafting Task will make less progress on the project and recieve less "extras" from any collaboration.
A pet can only complete two shifts a day, including partial shifts. You can have two different pets complete the same Task at the same time, in which case they gain a slight boost to Mood and both pets can access rewards otherwise exclusive to the other pet—for instance, a Crystal pet and a Reanimated pet that go Hunting at the same time would both be able to find Last Breaths and Blood Diamonds. While pairing two pets working on the same Crafting task, each pet can sometimes recieve "extras" from the other's project: depending on the project your pet may return with extra threads and fabric, a few leftover bites of food, even extra ink and paper for Ritual Notes and spell scrolls if you're lucky! You can also pair your pet up with a pet owned by a Friend, provided both pets are working on the same task & shift and aren't already buddied-up with another pet. There's really no reason not to pair up on every task, although there's rumors that the Chimeric devs may add (or may have already added!) items which can only be aquired by a pet Gathering alone at night.
See Gathering Tasks for Tasks which bring you resources, and Crafting Tasks for tasks which consume lower-level resources to create higher-level crafted goods. Note that this distinction is a fan-made one, and these aren't categories which the Chimeric team has used in official material (though some staff members have used the terms on the forums casually). Husbandry is sometimes considered an outlier given the higher investment it requires compared to other Gathering Tasks, and some say it should be thought of as a totally separate thing, but for the purposes of this wiki it's grouped in with Gathering Tasks because it provides basic resources.
