Okay, so technically just about everything can be collected, and there's plenty of users who try to collect as many stacks of, say, Chocolate Cake as they can. But there's a select group of items on the site that are part of specific themed Collections, which are often a goal for players to attempt to complete. These collections are as follows:
Collectibles can come from anywhere, thouch collections so far all follow a few patterns: they're added to the game whole, no new items will be introduced that make a once-complete collection become lacking; a few items in a collection will be common and easily aquired, while others are limited or very rare drops; and, lastly, Collectibles in every collection span multiple site features and skills in an attempt to encourage trading. As always, the Forums are a great place to go! If your Fishing-focused pet is giving you trouble finding a Collectible that needs high-level Mining, there's probably somebody out there with the exact opposite issue.
Completing a collection earns the player a special icon to display on their page or forum widget, as well as some sort of buff or access to a new feature to their account—completing the Starcard collection is a prerequisite to playing Constell with other players, for instance, while owning all the Orchestrionettes unlocks a variant of on-site music-making tool Cacophany, which is evocatively named Catastrophe. If any items from your collection are traded, sold, or destroyed, you lose access to the icon (replaced with a default Happy Wuzzle icon if you had it equipped) and any buffs or features that came along with it. All you have to do is re-complete the collection to re-enable your icon and benefits, though!
